Not just jobs for the boys!
The amazing win at this summer’s Euros by the England women’s football team helped to fuel debate and shift opinion about what women are capable of achieving, especially in previously male-dominated areas.
But at Greener Ealing we’re ahead of the game (sorry)! Despite women being underrepresented in environmental services overall, Greener Ealing has always welcomed women into our workforce across all of our operations, some are now our longest-serving employees.
We deliver street cleansing, grounds maintenance and refuse collection for residents and businesses. Predominantly located outside and at times physically demanding work, some assume the industry is more suited to men.
This is absolutely not the case and we’re proud to say that all our female workforce told us they would have recommended Greener Ealing to female friends and family. They said: “It’s a great place to work, lovely atmosphere and a flexible job when you have a family.”
From the hours to the sense of job satisfaction, we asked some of our female team what they enjoy about their roles at Greener Ealing.
Caroline Taylor, a grounds maintenance operative, joined Greener Ealing in 1989 as an apprentice, which gives her 33 years of continual service, so I think we can assume she likes it. “I love being outdoors and not sat at a desk, I couldn’t do that. Every year I like seeing the seasons change and doing all the different jobs required for grounds maintenance and successful growing. I love tackling a difficult and overgrown space and seeing the difference it makes to the environment.”
Nadezda Kazakevica, works in our street cleansing team and finds the working pattern ideal for her. She says: “Starting work early and finishing at 3 pm fits really well with my life. I’ve been doing this for 17 years now and it means I have my afternoon free to do other things – shopping, seeing friends, being outdoors, it just fits.”
With 50 years of service between them, they are fantastic advocates for Greener Ealing but we also have a whole new generation of women coming up too.
Evelina Barauska joined us through the Kickstart scheme, was signed onto the Queens Green Canopy project and is now doing a grounds maintenance apprenticeship and has a full-time role with Greener Ealing.
Women will continue to be a real asset to our organisation, and we hope to welcome even more into the teams in 2022.
